What is euthanasia?

Euthanasia is a gentle way to help your pet to transition. Your pet might be suffering due to pain from an injury or a disease. Ultimately, you know your pet better than anyone else and can speak to whether or not it’s the right time to peacefully end their life. Before you make your decision, our team will explore all the potential options your pet has, including the likelihood of recovery or how their quality of life is currently being impacted. We want to make sure your pet is enjoying their life to the fullest and their pain is not overshadowing their ability to do this.

Will my pet be in pain?

The goal of euthanasia is to honour your pet with a painless transition that allows them to end their life respectfully. Before the procedure, we recommend your family spend as much time with your pet to say your goodbyes. It’s important to give yourselves space to feel the full range of emotions associated with losing your furry family member. On the day of their appointment, we will do our best to ensure your pet is comfortable. We use a sedative to help them relax, before administering the life-ending medication. It usually takes a few moments to shut down your pet’s brain and heart, allowing them to peacefully transition and end any suffering they were experiencing daily.

How can I support my family with the loss of our pet?

The loss of your family member isn’t easy to process. We recommend your family honour your pet’s life through a memorial service or another activity that commemorates their life. By memorializing your pet, you can share happy moments from your pet’s life with the people who loved them the most. Be sure to lean on your support system, as well as our veterinary team, if you’re having a difficult time processing this loss. There are bereavement groups and other support we can recommend to help you cope with this difficult time.
