Weight Management for Pets

By achieving a healthy weight, your cat or dog will be less likely to develop underlying issues.

Did you know if your pet is overweight, it makes them more likely to get orthopedic diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems? Even a little extra weight can cause serious health issues and affect your pet’s ability to live a long, happy life with you. Weight management helps us provide you with support to help get your pet to a healthy weight.

How do I know if my pet needs weight management?

Since overweight pets are common, it’s difficult for pet owners to tell if their furry friends are overweight. The best way to know for sure is to book an appointment with us at 519-624-9760. We can take your pet’s metrics and determine if they are within a healthy weight range, based on their age, breed and activity level. If your pet is overweight, we will create a personal weight management to support them on their weight loss journey.

How does it work?

Weight management isn’t only about getting to a specific weight but building healthy habits that will continue throughout your pet’s life. Our nutrition team is able to provide a weight consultation where we’ll discuss your pet’s diet. Our veterinary office offers veterinary exclusive diets that can support their weight loss and overall health. We’ll discuss things like the right amount of food to feed your pet and how much daily activity they should have. Pets who are obese often have a shorter lifespan. We will help make sure you and your pet have as many days together as possible.

My pet has reached their goal weight. What happens next?

Congratulations on supporting your pet to reach their goal weight! We know this was a collaborative effort to make sure your pet was sticking to their diet and remaining active. Maintaining a healthy weight is as crucial as losing excess weight. Our veterinary team can discuss ways to maintain their weight. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Continue to practice portion control
  • Incorporate healthy treats into their diet, like apples, green peas and carrots
  • Treats should make up around 10% of their daily calories
  • Limit your pet’s access to their food outside of designated meals
